Where do we come from?

Foundation of KMT

The Brotherhood of KMT ASEN was Founded in 1988 by 10 Lights of Ra on Morehouse College Campus with the help of our treasured and beloved Elders. We emerged out of a social context of heightened scholarly, political and cultural consciousness among Black youth in the late 1980's.Along with the rise in the interest in current affairs of Africa was also growing interest in ancient African history, particularly that of Egypt as articulated by the Nile Valley Conference. On January 11, 1988 in Atlanta, GA, KMT ASEN became the FIRST African-Centered fraternity in the United States.

Cultural Reference

Why "Asen", Not Fraternity

In ancient KMT, the word for brother and husband is SN (Sen).ASEN would be the plural word roughly translated as "brotherhood".As with many African languages, there is more than one meaning that can also translate to "Companions", "Husbands", "Cousins", "Colleagues", "People Who Share the Same Characteristics", or "People of Equal Status".All of these terms apply to who we are and who we continue to strive to be as an organization culturally, structurally, and spiritually. The 10 Originals felt a particular need for brotherhood in the form of a collegiate fraternity; however they believed that an affinity with ancient African civilizations was more suited for African people than the traditional affinity with ancient Greece found in other college fraternities.

We are...

The Men of KMT

The ASEN comprises men who are fathers, husbands, community builders, and generally productive members of society. Our ASEN is a family unified by shared experiences, a clan with the same last name, holding the rituals of our ancestors dear. No man may stand alone against the storm of white supremacy and its winds of racism, sexism, and the hail of oppression. When one completes The ‘Crossing’ that brother is welcomed into the House of KMT; shelter from the storm. No longer alone, each brother unites with the ASEN to travel Eastward, implementing plans and creating relationships large and small, to break the yoke of oppression and white supremacy, and realize the Light of a Shining Afrikan world.
